From its summit at around 1,700 metres the view reaches on clear days across the whole Po Plain, the high-rises of Milan, as far as the Apennines, and over the entire chain of the Alps from the Gran Paradiso to Monte Rosa. The mountain has been accessed since 1890 by a rack railway that climbs the steep slope from Capolago on Lake Lugano, one of the oldest mountain railways of its kind in Ticino.

Geologically the mountain consists of mighty limestone layers, once deposited on the floor of a primeval sea and later folded up by the formation of the Alps. Within it lies hidden a whole system of caves, among them the Grotta dell’Orso, the Bear Cave, in which bones of the long-extinct cave bear were found. Since 2017 the summit has been crowned by the Fiore di pietra, the Stone Flower, a striking viewing building by the celebrated Ticino architect Mario Botta, which seems to hover over the valley like an opened blossom.

Related

To make your trip run smoothly , our guides and gear tips for this destination:

Hiking boots →Hut-tour packing list →Hut hiking for beginners →

Der Monte Generoso auf 1.704 m bietet einen Rundblick über die Tessiner Seen, die Po-Ebene und den Alpenbogen.
