Only in the 20th century did the remote valley change fundamentally, when the emerging winter sports discovered the gentle, grass-covered grass mountains of the Kitzb\u00fchel Alps as ideal ski terrain. From the two once independent villages of Saalbach and Hinterglemm grew one of the largest connected ski areas in Austria.<\/p>\n<p>The round, green-clad summits of the valley are no coincidence but an expression of geology: unlike the rugged limestone massifs of the northern Alps, the Kitzb\u00fchel Alps consist of softer schist rocks that weather into gentle forms and in summer form a wide hiking area of flowering alpine meadows.
