With your dog in the Alps

The mountains with your own dog , for many the finest experience. But four-legged friends aren’t allowed everywhere, and the rules differ considerably from region to region. Here is the honest overview: where dogs are welcome, where they must be leashed and where they have to stay out.

Dogs in the national parks , the rules

Nationalpark Berchtesgaden Dogs welcome, but leashes required.
Swiss National Park Dogs completely banned , even on a leash.
Gran Paradiso (IT) Only in the lower valley on a leash, some trails 15 Jul–15 Sep; no overnight stays with dogs.
Hohe Tauern (AT) Dogs allowed, leash required; avoid core zones.
Triglav National Park (SI) Dogs on a leash; respect wildlife refuge zones.
Vanoise National Park (FR) Banned in the core zone, partly allowed on a leash in buffer zones.

Cable cars, huts & lakes

  • Cable cars: usually allowed, often on a leash and muzzled , check in advance.
  • Alpine Club huts: Dogs are not allowed everywhere; usually not in the dormitory. Ask the hut in advance.
  • Lakes & dog beaches: many Carinthian lakes (Wörthersee, Faaker See, Millstätter See) and Tyrolean/Bavarian lakes have their own dog beaches; otherwise dogs are often banned at lidos.

Practical tips for a mountain hike with your dog

Heat: Start early in midsummer; dogs overheat quickly, plan for shade and breaks.

Paws: Scree, via ferratas and hot rock strain the pads , paw protection and checks help.

Water: Always carry enough water and a collapsible bowl, not every stream is clean.

Ticks: Check after the hike, pack tick tweezers/hooks.

Wildlife: Keep on a leash , do not disturb wildlife, grazing livestock (mother cows!) or ground-nesting birds.
