To watch chamois, ibex, marmots or golden eagles in the Alps, you need good optics, quiet muted clothing and, above all, patience. The key is not to disturb the wildlife and to keep enough distance.
Optics
- Binoculars (Advertising) – 8×42 or 10×42 as the all-round standard. Roof prism, waterproof, fog-free.
- Spotting scope & tripod (Advertising) – For long distances; 20–60× zoom, a stable tripod is mandatory.
- Camera with telephoto lens (Advertising) – From ~300 mm (full-frame equiv.) to document from a distance.
- Microfibre cloth & lens cleaner (Advertising) – Fogged/dirty lenses ruin any observation.
Clothing (quiet, muted)
- Muted, natural-coloured outerwear (Advertising) – Earth/green/grey tones instead of bright colours.
- Quiet materials (Advertising) – Avoid crinkly hardshells; soft fabrics (softshell).
- Warm beanie & gloves (Advertising) – During long, quiet waits the body cools down fast.
- Sturdy, quiet hiking boots (Advertising) – Grippy sole, broken in, for silent movement.
Comfort & patience
- Seat pad / sleeping mat (Advertising) – Watching means waiting; an insulating pad keeps you warm/dry.
- Thermos flask (Advertising) – Hot tea at dusk keeps you going.
- Camouflage cover / hide (Advertising) – Breaks up your silhouette, so shy animals come closer.
- Food & water (Advertising) – Pack quietly (no rustling bags).
Behaviour & conservation
- Keep your distance – Rule of conduct: if an animal flees, you were too close.
- Stay on the trails & respect wildlife refuges – Rule of conduct: observe strictly, especially in winter.
- Leash dogs – Rule of conduct: they trigger flight reactions.
- No feeding – Rule of conduct: it makes animals dependent and sick.
Pro tips
- Best times: dawn in the early morning and at dusk.
- Mind the wind direction: stalk with the wind in your face.
- Movement gives you away more than colour: move slowly, stay in cover, break your silhouette.
- Minimise noise, phone on silent, gear within reach beforehand.
- Choose the altitude deliberately: marmot/ibex above the tree line, chamois on steep slopes, red deer at the forest edge.
