Hut hiking for beginners

A hut tour is the finest way to immerse yourself deep in the mountains: on the move by day, in a rustic mountain hut high above the valley in the evening. With the right planning it's doable even for beginners.

What hut hiking means

You go from hut to hut and stay overnight on the way, instead of returning to the valley every evening. The mountain huts of the German and Austrian Alpine Clubs (DAV/ÖAV) offer half board and sleeping places in dormitories or rooms. That way you carry only the essentials and get far into the mountain world.

Planning & reservation

  • Reservation is mandatory: Book huts in advance and cancel if plans change; this keeps emergency beds free.
  • DAV membership is worth it: a reduced overnight rate and rescue-cost cover.
  • Plan stages honestly: Estimate elevation gain and walking time realistically, plan emergency descents.
  • Mountain weather (DAV) check in advance and in the morning, start early.
What to pack

As little as possible, as much as necessary, plus the mandatory equipment for DAV huts (e.g. a hut sleeping bag).

Great spots to start

In the Berchtesgaden region, the Watzmannhaus and the Kärlingerhaus am Funtensee are classic bases, both easy to reach and superbly located.

Safety

Assess your sure-footedness and fitness honestly, turn back early if storms threaten, and always leave your route and return time with someone at home. Then the first hut tour becomes an experience that's addictive.
