Background & History
The Camping-Resort Allweglehen lies above Berchtesgaden on a sunny mountain slope with a wide view of the striking Watzmann and the surrounding mountain world. The name points to the rural past of the place, for a ‚Lehen‘ (fief) once denoted, in old law, a farm left to its tenant for use without fully belonging to him. Over the years, today’s campsite developed out of such a traditional mountain farm, opening up the spectacular elevated setting of the Berchtesgadener Land for those seeking rest while preserving its link to the old farm history.
The Berchtesgadener Land itself looks back on an eventful history: for centuries the region was ruled by an ecclesiastical prince-provostry whose wealth rested above all on the white gold, the salt extracted in the famous salt mine that is still in operation today. Framed by mighty limestone massifs such as the Watzmann, the Hochkalter and the legendary Untersberg, the landscape today belongs to the Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany’s only Alpine national park. Anyone who looks out over the valley from the heights of the Allweglehen has this impressive mountain backdrop, around which countless old legends are woven, right before their eyes and senses why crowned heads and artists have long praised this land as one of the most beautiful corners of the Alps.
