Background & History
The Schilthorn rises to almost 2,970 metres above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Bernese Oberland and offers from its summit a famous panorama of the striking trio of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. In the 1960s the hard-to-reach summit was opened up by a boldly routed cableway that leads from Stechelberg, by way of the picturesque mountain villages of Gimmelwald and Mürren, up into the high-alpine world. In the process a revolving restaurant was built on the summit, slowly turning on its own axis and giving guests a complete all-round view over the Bernese Alps.
The Schilthorn became world-famous in 1969, when the James Bond film “On Her Majesty's Secret Service” was shot here. The film production helped to complete the then unfinished summit building, and in return the revolving restaurant was given the name Piz Gloria, under which it served in the film as the villain's hideout. To this day the mountain lives off this myth, an interactive exhibition recalls the film's history, and so on the Schilthorn the sublime mountain world of the Jungfrau region combines with the glamour of cinema.
