Background & History
Saalbach-Hinterglemm lies in the Glemm valley of the Salzburg region, a high valley originally settled by mountain farmers and miners, whose history was closely linked to the mining of copper and silver ore in the surrounding mountains. Only in the 20th century did the remote valley change fundamentally, when the emerging winter sports discovered the gentle, grass-covered grass mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps as ideal ski terrain. From the two once independent villages of Saalbach and Hinterglemm grew one of the largest connected ski areas in Austria.
The round, green-clad summits of the valley are no coincidence but an expression of geology: unlike the rugged limestone massifs of the northern Alps, the Kitzbühel Alps consist of softer schist rocks that weather into gentle forms and in summer form a wide hiking area of flowering alpine meadows. Thus Saalbach-Hinterglemm shows two faces over the course of the year, that of the lively international ski circus in winter and that of the quiet mountain world lined with alpine huts in summer, in which the old peasant culture of the Glemm valley remains palpable.
