Background & History
Lake Tenno lies above Lake Garda in the hills of Trentino and captivates with water of such a glowing Caribbean turquoise that it scarcely seems to belong to an Alpine lake. This extraordinary colour changes with the incidence of light and the season and makes the lake one of the most photogenic bodies of water in the region. At its centre lies a small island, which in dry summers, when the water level is low, can be reached on foot over a narrow spit of land, lending it a mysterious, almost enchanted charm.
Above the lake huddles the medieval village of Canale di Tenno, an almost perfectly preserved stone village with narrow lanes, archways and small courtyards, which is counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy and has hardly changed for centuries. For a long time it was a place of peasants and craftsmen, before artists discovered it, who appreciated the quiet ensemble forgotten by time and founded a small artists' colony here. Not far away the Varone Waterfall rushes through a narrow rocky gorge, another natural spectacle of the area. Thus at Lake Tenno the almost tropical grace of the water combines with the austere beauty of a medieval mountain village into a picture of rare unity.
