Background & History
On a gentle rise above Berchtesgaden, against the vast backdrop of the Untersberg, stands the pilgrimage church of Maria Gern, one of the most picturesque Baroque churches of the Berchtesgaden region. Its gleaming white façade and the slender onion-domed tower blend so harmoniously into the mountain landscape that the image of the church has become one of the most popular scenes of the region. It was built in the first half of the 18th century at a spot that had already been regarded earlier as a place of Marian veneration.
The Untersberg in the background is itself wreathed in legends. According to the legend, an emperor sleeps inside it who is one day to return, and the people tell of hidden caves and mountain spirits. Into this mythical landscape, Maria Gern fits as a place of stillness and prayer, which over the centuries drew pilgrims from across the entire Alpine region. Inside, the church holds a venerated image of grace of the Mother of God, which was for generations the object of prayer and thanksgiving, and the magnificent ceiling painting and the high altar bear witness to the richness of South German and Austrian Baroque art. To this day the deep popular piety of the Catholic mountain folk combines here with the overwhelming beauty of nature, in which the little church appears like a link between heaven and the mountains.
